Book publishers

Backlist, production costs and list decisions – open.junixx maps the core processes of the book business end to end.

What matters here

What counts for book publishers.

The book market has been in decline for some years now, and the reticence is especially noticeable among younger readers. For book publishers that means one thing above all: the risk of a new publication is weighed more carefully, and a larger share of the return has to come from the existing list. And a list rarely consists of individual titles but of hardcover, paperback, audiobook and translation – four editions carrying the same author texts and metadata.

That is exactly where open.junixx comes in. Title data keeps every edition of a title as one record with ONIX 3.0 and VLB reporting: maintained once, valid everywhere. Production, on the other side, works out what producing it costs – versioned costing, a planned/actual comparison per title, a carbon footprint to ISO 14067 – and makes the risen paper and printing costs calculable instead of letting them become visible only in hindsight.

That leaves the question of which manuscript justifies a new publication at all. Manuscript review screens submissions in a structured way – with a recommendation, the fit with the list and editorial notes – and makes the selection traceable instead of leaving it to individual gut feeling. That a considerable part of book discovery now happens on social media platforms whose rules no publisher sets is not answered by this; for your own presence there, the Media Cockpit sits in the same application. Three modules for the three tasks that mark the segment just now: return from the backlist, control over the costs, reliable list decisions.
